“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you’— when you already have it with you.” Proverbs 3:27-28 (NIV)

My mind raced as I turned into the plaza to order takeout and saw a man holding a sign. I assumed he was asking for money, and my heart pounded, knowing I’d pass him as I exited the plaza. Should I roll down my window to a stranger? If I give him money, will he use it wisely? Aren’t there plenty of resources out there for the hungry and homeless?

Then I recalled a moment in my teen years when a young woman came to our door asking my dad to buy books, promising delivery in a few weeks. I asked my dad, “How do you know you’ll get the books?” He said he’d rather chance being scammed than turn away someone truly in need.

That non-judgmental act continuously reminds me that it’s not for me to decide if someone is worthy; rather, if I can help in any way, I should.

As I ordered takeout, I thanked God for the means to buy extra food and the courage to hand it to the stranger. Did he need that meal? Had he already gotten plenty to eat that day? I have no idea, but at the very least, we exchanged smiles and a pleasant hello. If I didn’t warm his heart, he warmed mine.

PRAYER: Thank you, Lord, for the people you bring into our lives. Help us to use the gifts and resources you’ve given us to bless and encourage others in big and small ways each day. Amen.
